Got scammed into building a live client site during a fake “interview test”

Ugh, that’s honestly messed up! You’re definitely not alone, this stuff happens way more than it should. Companies pretending to hire but using applicants for free labor is just wrong. That "company property" excuse is BS, especially without any prior clause.
Sending an invoice and getting a lawyer involved is the right move. Keep all your emails and proof! Don’t let these scammers get away with it
a digital agency reached out to me for a dev role. seemed solid—portfolio looked good, pay was competitive after a couple interviews, they asked me to do a “technical assessment”: build a landing page for a potential tourism client. I spent 3 DAYS on it. added features they didn’t even ask for. they said it was “perfect” then nothing. ghosted.
a week later, my friend sends me a link to a new tourism site… it’s literally my code.
same layout. same animations. just a few tweaks. emailed the agency and they had the audacity to say “all test submissions are company property” 😐 checked my emails and there's no such clause. I sent them an invoice and am now lawyering up. if this happened to you too, pls tell me I’m not the only one. I’m so done with these scammy “assessments”
